I just wanted to say thank you to my wonderful grandparents for providing me with some much needed food (Canned Ham) and yet more peanut butter (still no j) but I have crackers so that will work well for me .
Pictured: Filet Mignon For the employment deficient
Anyway , I had two interviews today both of them at a company that sells carbon offsets in the deregulated energy industry. (it was not advertising but you take what you can get) before I dive into specifics I'd like to say a couple things:
1) I had interest because I'm a great believer in what Carbon offsets can do for the energy industry and the world ( help modernize , bring technology and industry together among other things like keeping us all alive and the earth in good condition) NEVER MIND what a green designation means for a company (positive pr and making a difference).
2) The ads didn't say much at the time ( they advertised decently paying positions so I called and asked questions) and they basically gave me an interview on the spot , I don't want to complain , if I can get interviews like that then great for me, But I was sort of wondering why is this so easy ? However I didn't want to be the one to miss out on an opportunity to have paid work so i took the interview.
So fellow grad that brings us to NOW
I went down to the office building (Located near Fairview Mall which was not too far from my last job and still not far transportation -wise) and got there early like i was asked . Anyway I get there and sit down and i'm handed an application form ( so far, so good whatever works for them.)
And lo and behold, someone sits beside me interviewing for the same position , let's just say he was not properly dressed ( for ANY interview I go with a healthy dress pants , dress shirt and tie combination) and by not properly dressed I mean his clothes were the whole nine yards of dirty other then the lack of presentation overall shown by this man.In fact , I'm pretty sure we were all lucky the guy decided to wear pants anyway this was an apt description of most my competition sadly.
Interview #1
I get called in , I sit down and quickly find out this was not the customer service position as I was led to believe over the phone. It was *drum roll please* a Commission based Sales opportunity. Now before i go any further , I am okay with a sales job . A sales job may even be in my future career path and pay for performance is a very fair way of compensation however, this job is 1) door to door and 2) there is NO base salary
This first interview did not go so well because before I went into the building nobody had told me which company I was interviewing with they had just told me when and where to be and who I was interviewing with that was my first bad sign by the way
Interview #2
Now this interview is for the same company , so my impression of this second one was a bit tainted , by this time i figured it was another commission based sales opportunity but I was never told , more like sidestepped around the issue instead. I was told it was a sales opportunity selling green energy to business clients so other then my previous impression playing into things so far so good.
THEN I HEAR THIS -
"you could RUN your own office within a year of working for us"
I bet if any higher ups are reading this right now, they are chuckling , as if I was in the position to offer an office to anyone it would not be 1) Mr. new grad and 2) to someone I was interviewing.
I'm sorry , no matter how good the opportunity this is just blatant shenanigans.
Anyway , if this was an opportunity I was not so skeptical about I would say this interview went very well . too bad something smells awfully fishy.
POST-Interview
Armed with a company name I looked them up - they did indeed have a bad reputation of high pressure sales , nasty unfair contracts and a weak BBB score . Not to mention employees getting a low - nothing return for their time investment (these employees also worked up to twelve hours)
TWITTER Generation summery of this post: I Got a couple interview's with an energy company , turned out to not be legit. Company had a bad reputation.
